There's a quiet, almost imperceptible bubbling sound when a sailboat starts to move after sitting motionless for hours, in the middle of the ocean.
Last night had very light wind, I seem to be in a wind hole. This morning a gentle breeze of 2 kts died completely. With sails slating, and my batteries down to 45% I started the engine and motored for a few hours, which gave me the chance to charge the batteries, make water, take a shower and do the dishes.
I've been sitting still, or at least Fairtide has been sitting still for quite a few hours. It's 1645 and a light breeze is blowing, first 2kts, then 3, 4, and now 7. I have a full main and genoa up and finally sailing. The wind is still flukey, rotating around so on minute I'm heading straight into it and then it clocks around so I'm sailing dead down wind.
There's a low swell and no waves to speak of. Now if the wind would pick a consistent angle I could set the sails and be on my way south and west.
