We left Bull Harbor about 0645 and skirted around Nahwitti Bar by going between Tatenall Reef and Vancouver Island. The water is really shallow so you have 6 watch your depth gauge carefully. It's also a rough ride as the ocean swells meet the outgoing current causing a very mixed up sea state. I passed Cape Scott about 1115, a major milestone and headed south to Winter Harbor 56 NM away. The wind was out of the NW at 17 to 20 knots with seas in the 4ft to 6 ft range. I had full main and big genoa up enjoying a fantastic down wind run the autopilot performed flawlessly. I was a bit closer to shore than I was comfortable with as I approached Sea Otter Cove so I fell off a bit thinking I would head out about 5 miles setting up a single jibe that would take me to the entrance to Winter Harbor. It was a great plan.... Until it wasn't 🥺. The seas built and were on my starboard aft quarter, mostly ok, but Fairtide did want to yaw a bit. Now for the fun 😱 part. The wind kept building to 28+ knots and I knew jibing was going to be dicy. I rolled up the genoa but still had a full main up. Needless to say jibing was a disaster. Got beam on to 28 kts with a full main and got knocked on my ear. Threw everything in the cockpit around as well a most everything below. The wind spun me around and next thing I know I'm sailing at 7 kts NORTH 😡. I was able to get the main partially down but it was too rough to go on deck. I fought the wind and sea for 4 miles until I could duck into a somewhat protected bay where the wind was only blowing 10 kts, dropped anchor in 50 ft and was able to get the sails and all my belongings straightened up. No being able 9 miles north of Winter Harbor I put up the jib and motor sailed those last few miles. I arrived at Winter Harbor safely, although quite tired at 1750, rafted up to Waterloo and opened a bottle of prosecco, I made it to the west side of Vancouver Island. 🎉🥂🎉
