It's about 1915 on Saturday evening. I've officially entered the ITCZ, based on my Predict Wind tracking page at, https://forecast.predictwind.com/tracking/display/SV-Fairtide/
The ITCZ aka the Inter Tropical Convergence Zone is a fluid area constantly in flux do to the meeting of the northern east-west trade winds north of the equator and the southern east-west trade winds below the equator. Normally, if there is such a thing, the ITCZ is a band between about 10° north of the equator to about 10 ° south of the equator. In the "summer" it can get pushed north by storms in the southern ocean, which is the case this year. I'm at about 11° N, so 60 to 100 miles farther north than earlier in the year.
Weather in the ITCZ can be a mix of everything from violent squalls with lightning to dead calm to just high wind and waves. Fortunately with technology, I can see the areas that might be hazardous as well as the areas with no wind. Hopefully, I'll be able to thread the needle and come through the area no worse for the ware, although it's probably gonna be a few days with little sleep since the winds can change rapidly.
The cool part of this passage is that I'll be crossing the equator. A big deal for mariners throughout the world.
More to come as I experience this area of the planet for the first time.
