I left Bodega Bay this morning at 10 am in the fog. The channel out of Bodega harbor to the bay is well marked and visibility was between a quarter and half a mile. But I still motored out at about 3 1/2 kts just to be safe. Once out in the bay proper I raised the main to the first reef, though there was little wind.

The wind finally picked up about an hour south of Point Reyes and I was able to sail for a few hours. A delightful change from the early days of this trip where I either fought the wind and waves or motored for endless hours.

I'm currently past all the shipping traffic in and out of San Francisco, definitely a relief and about 8 miles NW of Half Moon Bay heading for Monterey Bay.

Monterey is a special place for me. I think of Monterey as the great American writer, John Steinbeck's home although he's actually from Salinas CA.

Cannery Row, Tortilla Flats, Log of the Sea of Cortez, Of Mice and Men, and more are classics, that if you haven't read any of them since highschool I recommend revisiting any or all.

Oops, kind of a tangent there, but I'm back.

It's a beautiful moon lit night although the wind has died so I'm motoring again, at least the fog has lifted and it's noticeably warmer and not as damp as my previous overnight passages. If all goes well, I'll be in Monterey by 7 or 8 tomorrow morning after a relatively easy 120 NM passage.
